Troy, N.Y., April 24 - A dominating pitching performance by right-hander Shawn Miller (Troy H.S.) helped Hudson Valley Community College secure a split in today's doubleheader against Onondaga Community College, an NJCAA Division I opponent. Miller led the Vikings to a 2-1 victory in the opening game; Hudson Valley fell, 15-7, in game two.
As a Division I school, Onondaga offers athletic scholarships. Hudson Valley, a Division III junior college, does not offer any scholarships.
Playing at the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, Miller tossed a complete-game four-hitter. While Silvestre Castro (Norman Thomas H.S.) knocked in the game-winning run, Miller struck out nine batters, and he handcuffed Onondaga over the game's final five innings, allowing just two hits.
The Vikings trailed, 1-0, entering the bottom of the fourth, but Hudson Valley's Jason Martin (Pine Bush H.S.) tied the game by plating Bobby Krogh (Troy H.S.) with a double. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Josh Goodbred (Lansingburgh H.S.) drew a leadoff walk. After a single by Justin Meagher (Colonie H.S.), Castro drove Goodbred home with a sacrifice, putting Hudson Valley ahead, 2-1.
The 2-1 lead was all Hudson Valley's defense, which was error-free in the first game, would need. Late in the game, Krogh, playing first base, reached into the stands to snag a foul ball, and Jay Lansing (Trumansburg H.S.) made a diving grab on the foul line in deep right field to preserve the Hudson Valley win.
Martin and Meagher each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
In game two, the Vikings, who trailed 3-0 at the end of the first frame, rebounded with three runs in the second, but Onondaga continued to tack on runs throughout the game. Hudson Valley rallied late, scoring a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but it was not enough.
Meagher was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, giving him four hits on the day. Catcher Greg Henry (Troy H.S.) contributed a pair of singles and two runs batted in.
Hudson Valley is now 23-11-1 overall. Onondaga is 10-18.
