Troy, N.Y., April 1 - A six-run first inning propelled Hudson Valley Community College's baseball team to an 11-8 victory in the first game of this afternoon's doubleheader against NJCAA Division III Region III foe Finger Lakes Community College. Playing at Troy's Geer Field, Bobby Krogh (Troy H.S.) pitched seven innings of shutout ball in a 4-0 complete-game win in the second contest.
In the first game, Hudson Valley never trailed. Starter Aaron Marchese (Dennis-Yarmouth H.S., MA) tossed six innings, striking out three batters to pick up the win, and Josh Goodbred (Lansingburgh H.S.) threw a scoreless seventh and final inning to post a save.
Silvestre Castro (Norman Thomas H.S.) and Jason McKinney (South Glens Falls H.S.) each blasted a home run for the Vikings. Castro smacked a 370-foot shot in the bottom of the first inning; McKinney's solo homer came in the fourth.
Also in the fourth, Chris Cooper (Shenendehowa H.S.) hit a two-run double, knocking in the game-winning run for Hudson Valley.
The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when Goodbred singled in Jeremy Gatto (Columbia HS). Goodbred later scored off a grounder by Castro. In the next inning, catcher Jason Martin (Pine Bush H.S.) and Greg Henry (Troy H.S.) each doubled in a run.
The Vikings' defense made a statement early in the game with a first-inning double play. Then, in the second inning, the solid defensive effort continued as Martin picked off a runner at first.
Krogh struck out nine batters en route to his complete-game shutout. The lefthander scattered four hits and struck out the side twice.
Hudson Valley is now 5-7-1 overall. Today marked the first time this season the Vikings have faced a Region III opponent, so Hudson Valley is 2-0 in Region III action. Finger Lakes is 0-2 overall.
