Without the special contributions and support of Hudson Valley President James J. Fitzgibbons, the athletics programs could not have reached the growth and popularity it enjoys today. He supported the program in the 1950s, when the basketball games were played in the college’s gymnasium on the upper floors of the Hudson Valley Technical Institute, located on Seventh Avenue in downtown Troy. Under the direction of President Fitzgibbons, Hudson Valley built a new field house in 1968 that was the envy of other community colleges across the country, and became one of only a handful of two-year colleges in the state to offer football in 1969.
