As Hudson Valley’s first full-time time director of athletics, Donald Schmidt expanded the athletic program from three to 14 teams. He served as a director of the National Junior College Athletic Association for five years and was the editor of the JUCO Review for three years. His 1961-62 basketball team had a 21-game winning streak and won the Empire State Conference while compiling an overall record of 22-3. The Upstate New York Sportswriters Association named him Coach of the Year in 1962. He also directed the baseball team to an NJCAA Region III title in 1965. He was named executive assistant to the president in 1971 and ultimately became senior vice president of the college.
