Doty, Drexel Earns SUNY Winter Scholar Athlete of Year Awards

ALBANY, N.Y. – More than 20 student-athletes including nine SUNYAC student-athletes are being honored with the SUNY Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards for combining academic achievement with success in the arena of athletic competition during the 2024-25 winter season.

The four NCAA Division I member institutions that comprise the NCAA Division I Category for the SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards include University at Albany, Binghamton, University at Buffalo and Stony Brook, while 19 institutions make up the NCAA Division III/USCAA Category and include Alfred State, Brockport, Buffalo State, Canton, Cobleskill, Cortland, Delhi, Farmingdale, Fredonia, Geneseo, Maritime, Morrisville, New Paltz, Old Westbury, Oneonta, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Potsdam and SUNY Poly.

The NJCAA Category features the 29 two-year community colleges spread out across the state of New York: Adirondack, Broome, Cayuga, Clinton, Columbia Greene, Corning, Dutchess, Erie, FIT, Finger Lakes, Fulton Montgomery, Genesee, Herkimer, Hudson Valley, Jamestown, Jefferson, Mohawk Valley, Monroe, Nassau, Niagara, North Country, Onondaga, Orange, Rockland, Schenectady, Suffolk, Sullivan, Tompkins and Ulster.

The SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards recognize outstanding academic and athletic success in 29 different sports and are presented three times a year to coincide with the specific sports contested in the fall, winter and spring seasons. The Scholar Athletes of the Year in each sport will then be nominated for an overall Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's sports and women's sports in each category that will be announced in mid-July.

Because sport sponsorship varies among institutions, a minimum sponsorship formula has been developed for award selections. At least three (3) institutions must sponsor the sport in the Division I category, while at least five (5) institutions must sponsor the sport in the SUNY Division III/USCAA and SUNY NJCAA categories. For sports that do not meet the minimum threshold to be a viable award, an at-large category has been developed for each level and each season.

Women's Basketball - Brianna Weaver, Onondaga Community College

Description: Brianna Weaver finishes the 24-25 season as Onondaga's leading scorer averaging 13.3 points per game and shooting 31.1% from the 3-point line. She shot an astounding 9-21 (42.8%) from the arc in the first two games of Onondaga's appearance at the National Tournament in Rochester, MN against the No. 6 and No. 3 seeded teams. She earned First Team All-MSAC and First Team All-Region accolades for the season as well as Honorable Mention All-American. She earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the Fall of 2024.

Description: Sophomore leader on the 2025 Nassau CC team that finished third in the country at the NJCAA National Championship and as National Runner-Up/2nd in the country in 2024. In both years, Joseph reached the round of 16 at the NJCAA National Championship and rallied to finish in the top 8 in the consolation round, just missing a chance at the semi-final matches. Joseph earned the title of the NJCAA North East District Champion for his weight class in back-to-back years for 2025 and 2024. Joseph excels in his sport and in academic pursuits, earning the NJCAA's highest academic honor, NJCAA All-Academic First Team with a 4.0 GPA in 2024 and is poised to earn this prestigious honor again in 2025.

Men's At-Large - Tyler Drexel, Men's Bowling, Hudson Valley CC

Description: Tyler Drexel played a big role in the men's bowling team's success this year. The program finished runner-up in the NJCAA National Championships and the team was the top non-scholarship program. Drexel was named All-American for finishing in the top-8 of the All-Events standings. He also was named to the All-NJCAA Region 3 team and All-Conference First Team.

Women's At-Large - Jennifer Doty, Women's Bowling, Hudson Valley CC

Overall GPA: 4.0
Description: Jennifer Doty was HVCC's top bowler this season. She was named the conference player of the year. all-conference and bowled a conference bests, high-game (269) and high series (686). She was also named Region 3 Player of the Year after placing first at the Region 3 Championships. She just missed NJCAA All-American status by 21 pins, as she placed 11th in the All-Events standings.
