The Hudson Valley Community College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the next duo as recipients of the Vikings Student-Athlete of the Month award. The October 2024 student-athlete of the month recipients are Drew Schroeder (Men's Cross Country) and Abbigail Newell (Women's Volleyball).
A two-year starter from South Glens Falls, NY, Newell has been a crucial piece to the resurgence of the women's volleyball program into a top-5 program among the NJCAA Region 3. Abby has had a great season as she enters the NJCAA Region 3 championships with 190 kills on 707 attempts. She is also one of the team's best defensive players as she has accumulated 276 digs this year (3.41 digs/set).
A two-time All-Mountain Valley Conference member, Newell continues to lead the program to new heights as they secured the fifth seed in the 2024 NJCAA Region 3 Championships after finishing the regular season with a 10-4 regional record, the best in over two decades of the Vikings women's volleyball program.
Schroeder, a native of Ghent, NY, has been one of the team's premier runners this season as he has accumulated personal-best times in several meets throughout the year. He set is personal-best in an 8K race last weekend, a second place finish at the NJCAA Region 3 Championships, with a time of 28:40.8.
Drew recorded three, top-10 finishes, including second-place finishes at the last weekend's regionals and the Mountain Valley Conference meet on Oct. 19th, which garnered him All-Region and All-Conference recognition. In his first run of the year, he placed 12th overall at the SUNY Oneonta Airfield Invitational 6K meet, posting a personal-best time of 21:16.1.
The Vikings Student-Athlete of the Month award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes student-athletes for their outstanding achievements academically and athletically.
