The Hudson Valley Community College women's volleyball team defeated Mohawk Valley 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16) on Wednesday night to earn its first win of the 2017 season.

The Vikings jumped out to a fast start, winning the first two sets of the night behind strong defensive play and consistent hitting by the front line. As a team, the Vikings tallied 29 kills, 25 assists and 49 digs to go with a season-high 16 service aces.

Megan Woods (Averill Park/Averill Park) and Olivia Fischer (Averill Park/Averill Park) reached double-digit digs in the four-game match. Woods recorded 16 digs and Fischer tallied 11. Fischer joined Jessica Getty (Hartford/Hartford) and Danielle Pardo (Averill Park/Averill Park) with four service aces each.

Offensively, Kirstin Wood (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) had a team-high .333 hitting percentage with four kills and Fischer finished with five kills, hitting .267 percent on the night.

Jacqueline McCormick (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) had a big night defensively, leading the Vikings with five solo blocks. McCormick added two digs and three kills for a .200 hitting percentage.

The Vikings are back home this Friday night to face North Country at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Hudson Valley will host its annual pod and will play three matches against Jamestown, Niagara and Erie. All home matches will be webcasted live on the Vikings Broadcast Network.
