Hudson Valley Community College softball team (0-6) fought hard and played very well against Corning but were on the wrong end of the score as the Red Barons completed the series sweep on the Vikings on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: Hudson Valley 5, Corning 13 (6 innings)

The Vikings were an inning away from picking up their first win of the 2018 season but Corning's offense had other plans as the Red Barons took advantage of the added at-bats with the Vikings walking six consecutive batters in the bottom of the sixth inning. Corning went on to score 10 runs in the inning and forced the game to end with the eight-run mercy rule.

Hudson Valley had three players finish with multi-hit games with Paige Roberts (Cobleskill/Cobleskill) and Madison Herrington (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) each recording three hits. Roberts also connected for a double and an RBI. As a team, the Vikings collected a season-high 10 hits.

Matti Hayes (Castleton/Columbia) has started the season off strong at the plate and added two more base hits in game one, including a double. Hayes also started in the circle for the Vikings, tossing 4.1 innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits.

Game Two: Hudson Valley 0, Onondaga 10 (5 Innings)

The Vikings fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but answered with a six-run inning of their own to take the 6-3 lead. The Vikings pitching was unable to keep Corning off the bases and the Red Barons successfully came back to defeat Hudson Valley 18-6 in five innings.

Roberts continued her great day at the plate in game two as she collected a pair of hits and drove in one run. Emma Cicchanelli (Rensselaer/Rensselaer) scored a run and had a 2-RBI double in the Vikings six-run inning, helping Hudson Valley erase a three run deficit and create a three run advantage.
