The Hudson Valley Community College men's soccer team (8-4) won its third straight match after defeating North Country 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Hudson Valley Outdoor Athletic Complex.

The Vikings and the Saints played a back-and-forth match with both teams fighting for possession on their respective ends of the field. The Vikings finally broke through North Country's defense with under a minute remaining in the first half to take a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings goal started with Collin Skiff (Greenwich/Greenwich) passing a short, crisp ball to Asan Anarkulov (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado) in front of the net. As the defenders approached Anarkulov, he sent a cross pass to the left side and Luke Mara (Bethlehem/Bethlehem) was left alone to lay the ball into the net for the goal.

The Vikings went on the attack to start the second half and eventually broke through the Saints defense again for their second goal of the game. The Vikings leading scorer, Garrett Axtmann (Castleton/Maple Hill) was on the receiving end of a pass from Nicholas Savallo (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) that positioned Axtmann to score and put the Vikings up 2-0.

Benjamin Peay (Westerlo/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) earned his fourth shutout of the season as he recorded five saves in 90 minutes and improved to a 5-2 record when he is in goal for the Vikings.

The men's soccer team is home again this Wednesday, Oct. 11 to play Broome with the scheduled start time at 4 p.m.
