The Hudson Valley Community College men's soccer team (0-1) controlled the tempo for the majority of the game but failed to score, dropping its season opener 1-0 at Finger Lakes on Thursday night.

The match was played into the Finger Lakes half of the field for the majority of the game but the Vikings couldn't convert on its nine shots on goal. Following a Vikings misplay, the Lakers scored on a corner kick in the second half with a well placed ball and a header to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Vikings increased their offensive pressure in the final minutes of the match searching for the game-tying goal but unfortunately came up short. Freshman forward Garrett Axtmann (Castleton/Maple Hill) led the Vikings with 4 shots on goal and Kevin Granados tallied three saves in goal.

The men's soccer team returns to action for its home opener on Sept. 5 when they welcome Fulton-Montgomery with a 4 p.m. start time.
