Men's Lacrosse Falls Short in Season Opener

The Hudson Valley Community College men's lacrosse team dropped a tough road match 10-6 against nationally ranked Mercer on Saturday afternoon in West Windsor, NJ. 

In the program's first game in 728 days, the men's lacrosse team came out of the gates, energized and excited to be back on the field. They jumped out on Mercer, sharing goals and eventually took a 5-3 lead in the third quarter. Mercer responded and outscored the Vikings 7-1 in the final third of the game to secure the 10-6 win. 

The Vikings battled all game with the defense anchoring their early success, but ran out of gas towards the end of the game. Hudson Valley had three individuals score two goals each. Gavin Breen (East Greenbush / Columbia) hit the back of the net twice on four shots and collected one ground ball. 

Matt Calicchia (Latham / Shaker) also tallied two goals on three shots and assisted on three other goals. Jack Alvey (Latham / Shaker) was the third Viking to get two goals, on two shots and collected five ground balls. 

The Vikings run against nationally ranked opponents continues on Wednesday, March 16 when they welcome national-power Onondaga to the Outdoor Athletic Complex at Hudson Valley. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
