The Hudson Valley Community College football team (4-5) earned a 28-24 victory over Nassau Community College (1-8) on Saturday evening.
Quarterback Chris Wolcott (Albany/Albany) scored on a 36-yard rush in the first quarter to take an early 7-3 lead. After linebacker Marvin St. Vil (Middletown/Middletown) forced a Nassau fumble that was recovered by Marken Vilson (Glades Central/Belle Glade, FL), Jaylen McIntyre (CBA Albany/Latham) scored two plays later on a 20-yard run making it 14-3. The Lions would answer on the ensuing kickoff with a 48-yard return to set them up with great field position, and Ahmere Dorsey would score on a 9-yard run to cut the lead to 14-10. With 1:13 left in the half, the Vikings drove 53 yards, capped off by a 15-yard touchdown from Wolcott to Cortez Watson (Forest Park/Woodbridge, VA) to take a 21-10 lead into the half.
After both teams failed to score in the third quarter, the game got close late in the fourth. Nassau drove 70 yards to make it 21-18, but the Vikings answered right back with a 70-yard drive of their own. Wolcott scored on a 1-yard run to score his third touchdown of the night. The Lions would add another touchdown, but it was too late as the Vikings ran out the clock to earn the 28-24 win.
Wolcott led the offense with 105 yards and a touchdown through the air and 82 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Watson recorded a team-high 85 yards on ground on eight carries, and McIntyre added 63 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Fred Johnson (East Syracuse-Minoa/Syracuse) led all receivers with six receptions for 85 yards.
Defensively, St. Vil and Nicholas Sutton (Pennsville Memorial/Pennsville, NJ) led the team with eight tackles apiece, and Jon Miller (Pelham Memorial/Pelham) added seven tackles, including a sack and forced fumble.
The Vikings end the season with a 4-5 overall record.
