Hudson Valley's Defense Records Seven Sacks And Derrick Dyer
Scores Twice As The Vikings Roll Past Williams College's JV
Williamstown, Mass., September 30, 2001 - Hudson Valley Community College's football team used a strong effort by its defensive line to post a 23-7 victory against Williams College's JV squad at Cole Field today. The Vikings picked up seven quarterback sacks, stopped Williams College behind the line of scrimmage 11 times for a total loss of 62 yards, and held the Ephs to 34 rushing yards on 34 carries.
Hudson Valley is now 4-0 (3-0 in Northeast Football Conference play). Williams College's JV team, a non-league opponent that includes players from the four-year school's varsity roster, is 1-1.
Linebacker Shadee Davis (New Brunswick H.S.) put the Vikings on the board just 10 seconds into the second quarter, sacking Williams College quarterback Mike Keenan for a safety. Davis finished the game with 2.5 sacks. Paul Haynes (Hudson H.S.) added two sacks. He also helped hold Williams College on the Hudson Valley one-yard line on the final two plays of the first half, preserving a 9-0 Hudson Valley lead before the teams headed toward the locker rooms.
While Hudson Valley's defense was stingy, Derrick Dyer (John Marshall H.S.), an all-NFC player in 2000, contributed five receptions for 113 yards. Justin Kastner (Hudson H.S.) hit him with a 47-yard scoring strike in the second quarter and Dylan Cooper (Saratoga H.S.) added a 3-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter. Dyer has six touchdowns in 2001. Maceo Clinton (William Floyd H.S.) rushed for a game-high 61 yards and scored from 13 yards out. Fullback Tennell Savage (Notre Dame H.S.) rushed for 48 yards and had a 23-yard reception.
Hudson Valley plays at Erie Community College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 6.
Hudson Valley's football program was established in 1969. At the time, Hudson Valley was one of only two junior colleges in New York to field a varsity football team. Since then, nearly 300 Hudson Valley football players have earned scholarships to four-year schools and 15 have gone on to play professionally. The Vikings competed in the Coca Cola Bowl in Iowa in 1980. In 1996, Hudson Valley posted an 8-0 record, part of a dominant stretch that included 15 straight victories.
