Hudson Valley Community College wide receiver Shawn Miller (Troy H.S.) was named Northeast Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Hudson Valley's September 9 victory against SUNY Canton. Miller, a preseason NJCAA First Team All-American selection, had six catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns against the Northstars, leading the Vikings to a 21-0 win.
Miller, a team captain who caught touchdown passes of six and four yards, is a second-year player who holds Hudson Valley's record for receptions in a game (11). An Individual Studies major, he is currently being recruited by several major NCAA Division I colleges.
Hudson Valley (1-0) hosts SUNY Morrisville (0-2) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 15. Due to construction of a minor-league baseball stadium at Hudson Valley, the game will be played at Troy's La Salle Institute.
Hudson Valley's football program was established in 1969. At the time, Hudson Valley was one of only two junior colleges in New York to field a varsity football team. Since then, nearly 300 Hudson Valley football players have earned scholarships to four-year schools and 15 have gone on to play professionally. The Vikings competed in the Coca Cola Bowl in Iowa in 1980. In 1996, Hudson Valley posted an 8-0 record, part of a dominant stretch that included 15 straight victories.
