The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (23-13) split with Onondaga Community College (34-12) in Sub Regional action on Sunday afternoon. The Vikings won game one, 5-2 and lost game two, 5-7.
The Vikings took an early lead in the first inning with two runs, and the Lazers tallied two runs in the third to even the score.
After two scoreless innings, Hudson Valley regained the lead with a two-run home run hit by Brandon Cellucci (Averill Park/Troy). Jonnie Benniefield (H.B. Plant/Tampa, FL) recorded the last RBI of the game scoring Austin Lawrence (Columbia/East Greenbush) in the eighth inning.
Dan Yankowski (Ichabod Crane/Valatie) pitched a complete nine innings in game one, recording six strikeouts and only two walks in the victory.
In game two, the Vikings held a 4-2 lead after the rain delay ended through the end of the third inning. In the fourth inning, the Lazers took a 5-4 lead. Danny Coleman (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) responded in the bottom of the inning with his 11th homerun of the season, to tie the game 5-5.
Onondaga capitalized on an error in the eighth, taking a two-run lead and winning the second game of the three-game series.
Coleman led Hudson Valley going 2-3 at the plate, and Brendan Haverty (LaSalle Institute/Troy) recorded a double and a run in the loss.
The men host Onondaga tomorrow at the Joe Bruno stadium at *UPDATED* 1 p.m. (12 p.m.) for the third game in the Sub Regional matchup.
