The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (4-4) lost to Harper College (3-2) 6-3 and defeated Garrett College (8-5) 6-5 on Wednesday morning.
In the first game, the Vikings trailed Harper 6-1 in the top of the seventh inning. Clayton Patrick (Schuylerville/Schuylerville) reached base, hitting a single past Harper's second baseman. Patrick would later score on a fielder's choice hit by Alex Koshgarian (CBA/Cohoes).
Luuk Visser (Thorbecke Voortgezet Onderwijs The Hague/Holland, Netherlands) followed with a hit, moving Koshgarian into scoring position, and Nicolas Teitter (Saugerties/Saugerties) scored Koshgarian with a single to centerfield. The Vikings were not able to score any more runs, and fell to the Hawks by three runs.
In the second game, the Vikings led the Lakers 5-0 after five innings, scoring one in the first and four in the fifth. During the sixth inning, Garrett rallied with four runs on three hits and two walks, pulling within one of the Vikings.
After holding the Vikings scoreless in the sixth, the Lakers tied the game in the seventh with an RBI double.
Jimmy Griffin (Watervliet/Watervliet) led off the bottom of the seventh for the Vikings with a walk. Coach Jurczynski went to the bench and brought in Zach Hyland (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) as the pinch runner on first. After moving to second on a sac-bunt, Hyland moved to third on a passed ball.
The next Hudson Valley batter struck out, leaving Visser at-bat with two outs. With a 1-0 count, Visser hit a walk-off single past the second baseman, scoring the game-winning run.
The men finish The Ripken Experience tomorrow against Finger Lakes at 9 a.m.
