The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (3-3) defeated both Garrett College (7-4) 8-7 and College of Southern Maryland (2-12) 4-3 on Tuesday evening.
In the first game, the Vikings got off to an early start when Nicolas Teitter (Saugerties/Saugerties) hit an RBI single, scoring Alex Koshgarian (CBA/Cohoes) putting the Vikings up 1-0 in the first inning.
In the second, Koshgarian hit an RBI single into the outfield, scoring Jonnie Benniefield (H.B. Plant/Tampa, FL). Brendan Haverty (LaSalle Institute/Troy) also had an RBI in the second, scoring Teitter and Luuk Visser (Thorbecke Voortgezet Onderwijs The Hague/Holland, Netherlands).
Koshgarian hit his second RBI in the third inning, scoring Dominick Herald (CBA/Colonie) giving the Vikings a 4-1 lead over Garrett. Hudson Valley went scoreless the next two innings, and gave up three runs to tie the game.
In the bottom of the sixth Teitter hit a lead-off triple, and later scored on Sean McLaughlin's (LaSalle Institute/Melrose) single into the outfield. With two outs, Benniefield hit two-run RBI scoring both McLaughlin and Herald.
The Lakers tried to rally in the seventh, scoring two runs before Austin Lawrence (Columbia/East Greenbush) made the final out of the game.
In game two, the Vikings trailed Southern Maryland 4-3 headed into the seventh inning. Garrett Klahr (Shaker/Latham) started the seventh with a single. Coach Jurczynski wanted speed on the bases, so he put Lawrence in as a pinch-runner for Klahr.
The strategy paid off as Danny Coleman (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) hit a double into leftfield, allowing Lawrence to score easily. During the next at bat Koshgarian recorded his third RBI of the day, scoring Coleman for the winning run.
The men take on Harper at 9 a.m. and Garrett at 12 p.m., tomorrow for the fourth day of The Ripken Experience.
