The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (6-4) defeated Clinton Community College (0-8) 6-4 and 10-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Nicholas Viola (Niskayuna/Schenectady) picked up his first win of the season coming in relief with runners on first and third in a 3-3 ball game in the top of the fifth, with only one out. Viola struck out the next two batters to keep the game tied. John Craig (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) answered in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double, and Jon Bonarrigo (Albany/Albany) followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 6-3. Mike Verschelden (Chatham/Chatham) closed out the last two innings, striking out three to earn the save in game one. Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy) and Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) each scored two runs in the win.
The Vikings mercy-ruled the Cougars in game two as Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) and Josh Temple (Cohoes/Cohoes) combined to pitch a three-hit shutout. Craig led the Vikings going 3-3 at the plate with two singles, a double, three RBIs and a stolen base. Fenton and Kozak each reached base in their three plate appearances, scoring two runs apiece.
The Vikings are currently riding a five-game winning streak and will play at Schenectady on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
