The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (6-6) competed in its first Region III play of the season, splitting a doubleheader with Schenectady County Community College on Thursday, April 1, 5-3 and 6-1.
In game one, the Vikings dug themselves a hole early as the first Schenectady batter of the day reached first after a Viking error. The very next pitch was hit deep over the left-field fence, making it a 2-0 game before the Vikings' ace, Aaron Tilley (Troy, Troy), was able to record an out. Hudson Valley threatened throughout, but left several runners on base in scoring situations and eventually fell to the Royals, 5-3. Dave Balsamo (Shenendehowa, Halfmoon) went two-for-four.
Game two was much more favorable as the Vikings jumped out to an early lead and pitcher, Alex Sardo (Chatham, Chatham), threw a complete game, giving up one earned run. Bobby Peluso (Columbia, East Greenbush) had three RBIs in the game, hitting a two-run homerun in the process. Bobby McLoughlin (Bishop Gibbons, Schenectady) went two-for-four as the Vikings took the final contest, 6-1.
