By the time that sophomore Daniel Barbero (Bronx/Lehman High School) hangs up his cleats this season, he may own virtually every single-season offensive mark in the Hudson Valley Community College baseball record book. Barbero finished with six hits in leading Hudson Valley (23-15) to a doubleheader sweep of Genesee Community College (7-16) at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium earlier today. Hudson Valley won the opener 13-0 and the nightcap 10-0.
Barbero, currently hitting .492 on the season, has tied or set three major offensive records and is on the verge of establishing more. He currently has 64 hits and eight home runs, which tie the single-season marks that were set by current University at Albany catcher Jason Martin last year. He poked his 11th triple of the season in today's opener, surpassing the old mark of 10 triples by Silvestre Castro in 1991.
Not only did Barbero go three-for-four in each of today's games, he also pitched a complete game, one-hit, shutout in the opener to lead the Vikings. He struck out five and walked one.
Freshmen Jonathan Callahan (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) and Rashad Barksdale (Hudson/Hudson High School) each finished three-for-three with three RBI in the opener for Hudson Valley. Sophomore Michael Harrington (Troy/Troy High School) finished two-for-three with a double and an RBI.
Freshman pitcher Rafael Espinal (New York/George Washington High School) allowed only one hit over six innings to pick up the win for Hudson Valley in the second game. He fanned seven Genesee batters.
Harrington was two-for-three at the plate and freshman Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie High School) hit a two-RBI double for the Vikings in the nightcap.
