Sophomore Daniel Barbero (Bronx/Lehman High School) was five-for-five with two home runs, a double and five RBI on the day to lead the Hudson Valley Community College (9-7) baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over Clinton Community College (0-2) at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy. Hudson Valley won the first game 20-2 and the nightcap 19-6. Both games were stopped in the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.
Barbero finished with two hits, including a home run, and two RBI in the opener. Freshman Chris Salamida (Watervliet/Watervliet High School) was three-for-three with a home run and two RBI while freshman Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie High School) had two doubles and three runs scored.
Freshman right-hander Rafael Espinal (New York/George Washington High School) allowed only two hits and one run over four innings of work to pick up the win. He struck out five.
Barbero, Gijon-Owen, and freshman Anthony Montone (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) picked up three hits apiece in the second game. Barbero has now hit safely in eight consecutive at bats. Salamida was one-for three with a grand slam home run.
Freshman right-hander Daniel McKittrick (Albany/Albany Academy) allowed two hits and four earned runs over five innings of work to pick up the win. He fanned eight.
