At 4 p.m. on Friday, Hudson Valley Community College's baseball team will play Erie Community College in the NJCAA Division III Region III tournament. Hudson Valley advanced to the "Final Four" of the tourney by defeating Jamestown Community College, 9-0, in a sub-regional game on Tuesday. Erie beat Finger Lakes Community College, 13-2.
With four teams eliminated from the tourney on Tuesday by sub-regional games, the Region III tourney is now a double-elimination event. The seedings are as follows:
- Schenectady County Community College
- Hudson Valley Community College
- Erie Community College
- Jefferson Community College
This next and final round of games will be played at Utica's Murnane Field. The championship game will be played at noon on Sunday, and the winner advances to the NJCAA Division III World Series. Hudson Valley (31-13-1 overall and the defending Region III champion) split a regular-season doubleheader with Schenectady and Jefferson this year. The Vikings did not play Erie.
In the 2000-01 academic year, Hudson Valley's athletic teams combined to win 72 percent of their contests. The ice hockey team won the NJCAA championship, the baseball team earned a berth in the NJCAA World Series and the football team won the Region III title. The women's basketball team earned a No. 1 national ranking and turned in a 24-3 record while the men's hoop squad competed in the Region III championship game. Additionally, two Vikings earned Region III Player-of-the-Year status, 20 were named All-Region III performers, and 10 were honored with All-American status.
