Women's Tennis Wins Region 3 Championship (First Since '98)

The Hudson Valley Community College women's tennis team made history on Sunday afternoon as they claimed the program's first NJCAA Region 3 championship since 1998 after winning five of the nine matches at Mohawk Valley, the host of the Region 3 championships.
Hudson Valley's top-seed, Keely Legnard continued her dominance in the No. 1 singles flight as she defeated Mohawk Valley's Victoria Vo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Mia Manera also finished the season strong as she won the Region 3 title at No. 2 singles after she defeated Mohawk Valley's Marga Villahermosa 6-4, 6-3. Legnard and Manera also claimed the Region 3 No. 1 doubles championship, defeated Vo and Villahermosa 8-5.
Aubrie Murphy won the No. 3 singles title by defeating Mohawk Valley's Cailynn Patterson 6-1, 6-1 and she teamed with Zara Cole to claim the No. 2 doubles title by the score of 8-2. Cole was defeated in the No. 4 singles match, dropping her match to Mohawk Valley's Hannah Peola, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1).
Sidney Phillips put up a strong effort in the No. 5 singles flight but fell in three sets to Mohawk Valley's Amber Piersma. Piersma defeated Phillips 6-4, 6-6 (4-7), 7-5. Phillips teamed up with Olliver Bulmer at No. 3 doubles and were defeated 8-6.
At the end of the match, Coach Bruce Perry was awarded with the NJCAA Region 3 Coach of the Year, a well-earned recognition.
The women's team will now travel to the NJCAA National Championships which are set to begin this Friday, May 10 – 13 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
