Tennis Defeats Defending Champion, Mohawk Valley

The Hudson Valley Community College women's tennis program took a huge step forward in achieving their goal of earning the program's first Region 3 championship since 1998 after they defeated Mohawk Valley 7-2 on Saturday afternoon in Utica, NY.

The match started outdoors until some unexpected rain forced the match to be moved to the Hawks' indoor facility. Once the match was moved indoors, the Vikings jumped out of the gate, winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 match lead as they finished the singles portion indoors. Keely Legnard and Mia Manera earned an 8-1 win as the top doubles team and Aubrie Murphy and Zara Cole have built a strong comradery as the duo have played together for two seasons now. Murphy and Cole earned a win in their No. 2 doubles match 8-1.

In the singles portion, Keely Legnard remained undefeated on the year and won in straight sets 6-0, 6-4. Mia Manera has come on strong over the last two matches, posting a 2-0 record during that span, including a 6-1. 6-7 (7-1), 10-5 match win.

Aubrie Murphy and Zara Cole finished with a straight set win at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Closing out the match was Sidney Phillips, who won her No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-2.

The Vikings and Hawks will play again on Wednesday, April 24th at Hudson Valley. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. on the Hudson Valley tennis courts.
