Women's Basketball Falls to No. 6 Onondaga

The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball program was defeated 63-47 as they faced a tough opponent in nationally-ranked Onondaga on Sunday afternoon at the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of HVCC.

In the first quarter, the Vikings played the Lazers evenly through the first 10 minutes as Onondaga won the quarter 16-15. The Vikings managed to utilize quick ball movement within their set plays to score on the attack. They also forced Onondaga into nine first quarter turnovers and Hudson Valley took advantage, scoring seven points on the resulting fast-break opportunities.

During the second quarter, Onondaga proved to be the national power they are as they started the quarter with an 11-2 run to push their lead to double-digits. Towards the end of the quarter, Hudson Valley put a small rally together and entered the halftime break trailing by nine points, 34-25.

In the first half, Hudson Valley shot 25-percent from the floor, shooting 7-of-28 from the floor, including 2-of-9 from behind the three-point arc. Leah Pergola led all scorers in the half, scoring 12 points on 4-of-10 from the floor and Sidney Phillips shot 2-of-9 for six points. Onondaga shot 48-percent on 14-of-29 from the floor with only four three-point attempts and were led by Precious Gabriel, who scored nine points on 4-of-8 shooting. Pergola finished with a game-high 22 points and added six rebounds in 35 minutes of action.

In the second half of the game, the Vikings were over-powered by the No. 6 ranked Lazers and were outscored 16-6 in the third quarter, which allowed Onondaga to pull away and secured the convincing win.

Up next for the Vikings women's basketball program is a road match against Mohawk Valley at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8th in Utica, NY.
