Stackrow, Ewans-Edmonds Leads Vikings in Win over UConn-Avery Point

The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team won a non-regional match 92-77 against UConn-Avery Point Tuesday evening at the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College. 

The Vikings jumped out to a quick lead on the Pointers and utilized a 22-4 run behind an even scoring attack, led by Junasia Lanier, who posted seven points on 2-of-6 shooting. Leemya Garcia finished the opening quarter with six points, two assists and three rebounds as she set the pace of the game for Hudson Valley during the big first quarter run. Lanier finished the game with xx points. 

UConn-Avery Point found a rhythm in the second quarter, but the Vikings offensive efficiency was too much for the Pointers. The Vikings leading scorers, Kat Stackrow shot 4-of-6 in the quarter for 12 points (15 first half points) and Nya Ewans-Edmonds added nine of her 13 first half points in 18 minutes of action. Leading the way for the Pointers in the opening half was Adeline Smith, who posted a first half double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Stackrow finished with a game-high 32 points with seven rebounds and five assists. Ewans-Edmonds finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. 

The third quarter was evenly matched with the Vikings outscoring the Pointers by a narrow three-point margin (25-22). Stackrow continued to add to her points total with another 10-point quarter and Ewans-Edmonds finished with nine points in the quarter and the Vikings entered the final frame leading 74-48. 

In the final quarter, the Vikings and Pointers continued to trade baskets with the Vikings holding on to a comfortable lead throughout to secure their tenth win of the season. The Vikings return to the McDonough Sports Complex on Thursday, February 10 at 5 p.m. as they take on Fulton-Montgomery.
