Freshman Laura Rogers (Greenwich/Schuylerville High School) had two hits, including a two-run double, to lead the Hudson Valley Community College (20-7) softball team to a 4-0 win over Tompkins Cortland Community College (22-14) in the opening round of the NJCAA Region III tournament earlier today in Troy.
Hudson Valley, the tournament's second seed, advances to the regional final four in Horseheads, and will meet No. 3 Monroe Community College on Friday, May 13. The final four will be played in a double elimination format.
Freshman pitcher Kim Wintergerst (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School) picked up the win on the mound to run her record to 9-3 on the season. She scattered four hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking two.
Sophomore Ashley Daurio (Johnsonville/Hoosic Valley High School) also had two hits for Hudson Valley.
Seventh-seeded Tompkins Cortland was unable to get a runner past first base the entire game.
