The Hudson Valley Community College (19-7/18-2 Region III) softball team handed Broome Community College (25-1/25-1 Region III) its first loss of the season with a 1-0 win in the opening game of a doubleheader played earlier today in Troy. Broome rebounded to take the second game, 2-1.
Broome entered the game ranked second in the latest NJCAA Division III poll. The Lady Vikings are ranked 12th.
Freshman pitcher Kim Wintergerst (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School) tossed a complete game two-hit shutout for the Lady Vikings in the opener. She struck out six and one.
Wintergerst singled to open the sixth inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Mindy McDonough (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh High School). Wintergerst came around to score the game-winning run when freshman Laura Rogers ground ball to second base was thrown away.
Broome pitcher Shelly Forsburg held Hudson Valley to only one hit in the second game. She struck out one and walked three. She also had two hits for the Hornets.
