The men's and women's track and field teams participated in the Bronco Classic, which saw NCAA Division II & III institutions as well as teams from the NJCAA. At the end of the meet, there were over 20 new season bests, two school records broken and three individuals and one relay team qualifying for NJCAA Nationals.
Devin Kipp (Hudson/Hudson) had a great day not only in the field but on the track as well. Kipp's day started off teaming up with Brandon Clancy, Christian Otorubio, and Noah Vice in the 400m relay. The relay time of 44.69 seconds was good for second place overall and a trip to Nationals, eclipsing the standard by a half second. Kipp later competed in the shot put, where he threw a new best of 13.07m, good for fifth and a spot in the Nationals. Kipp's third event of the day, the 100m, earned him another chance to compete at Nationals after placing fifth overall with a time of 11.33.
Christian Otorubio (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./David Thomas) ran a season best in the 100m and finished in ninth place with a time of 11.58. Otorubio had already qualified for Nationals as part of a relay team and later qualified in the 200m with a season best of 23.19 seconds.
In the high jump, teammates Jamison Jarosz (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) and Noah Vice (Rotterdam/Valatie) took fourth and eighth with jumps of 1.85m and 1.70m, respectively. Jarosz's jump of 1.85m qualified him for the National Meet in May.
Elijah Washington (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) had already qualified in the hammer throw, he nearly missed out on the school record at last week's meet at Smith College. This week was another story, Washington broke the school record on his second throw with a distance of 43.72m. Jasmine Minick-Seldon and Alexis Holmes also qualified for regionals for the weight throw event. Minick-Seldon's throw of 25.43m broke her own school record that she had set last week.
Ashley Martinez (Red Hook/Red Hook) and Alayna Fredenburg (Rotterdam/Schalmont) added two more top-10 finishes in the day. Martinez's first attempt at the 400m, she a ran a time of 1:08.45 and finished in ninth place. Ashley also finished with a new personal best in the 100m with a time of 13.86 seconds. Her times in both the 100m & 400m are very close to meeting the national qualifying standard. Fredenburg finished in fourth place in the javelin throw with a toss of 28.68m.
The Vikings will be attending the Cortland Classic this weekend at SUNY Cortland. This meet will also feature three events that will be counted towards the Region 3 Championship Meet; 10k, decathlon, and heptathlon.
