Men's Basketball Season Ends; Falls in Quarterfinal Round

The Hudson Valley Community College men's basketball team was outmatched on the boards as they dropped a tough quarterfinal match 80-69 against the Corning Red Barons on Tuesday evening in the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College. 

In the first half, the Vikings combined to shoot 13-of-36 from the floor for 34 points as they trailed Corning by one point at the break. Corning jumped out early on the Vikings as they shot 44 percent from the floor (13-of-29) and outrebounded Hudson Valley 31-16 in the opening half, allowing for several second chance opportunities.

Leading the way for Hudson Valley in the first half was Luke Bourgault, who shot 5-of-8 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Kobi Wallace added 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Bourgault finished the game 18 points, while Wallace finished with a game-high 26 points, eight rebounds and three steals. 

In the second half, Corning outscored the Vikings 45-35 and controlled the flow of the game for the majority of the half. Aided by the fact Corning outrebounded the Vikings 56-37 in the game, including 18-9 on the offensive end. 

Hudson Valley's Trevor Green also finished in double-digit scoring as he posted 16 points on 7-of-13 from the floor and added six rebounds, five assists and two steals before fouling out with under five minutes remaining in the game. 

The Vikings finished the 2021-22 season with a 16-7 record on the year, which included historic wins over nationally ranked Herkimer and a sweep of Mohawk Valley, a historically perennial program.
