Sophomore guard Maurice Lane (Bakersfield, CA/West High School) finished with 21 points, including 17 points in the second half, to lead the Hudson Valley Community College (13-5) men's basketball team to an 89-84 win over Mohawk Valley Community College (11-5) today in Troy.
Hudson Valley held a 44-23 point lead at halftime, but Mohawk Valley shot a blistering 74.3 percent (26-for-35) from the floor in the second half to claw back into the game. At one point, the Hawks hit 16 consecutive field goal attempts.
Hudson Valley shot 51.9 percent (28-for-54) from the floor for the game, but won the game at the foul line where the Vikings hit 24-of-30 free throw attempts and Mohawk Valley made just 11-of-26 from the charity stripe.
Freshman guards Justin Gallo (Brunswick/Lansingburgh High School) and Ryne Luce (Cohoes/Cohoes High School) each hit four three-point baskets apiece for the Vikings, finishing with 18 points and 17 points, respectively. Sophomore forward Zach Bye (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville High School) added 13 points and 17 rebounds and sophomore center Kevin Goutos (Altamont/Guilderland High School) chipped in 12 points.
Mohawk Valley got a game-high 23 points from Joel Almeida (Cape Verde Islands).
