Baseball Sweeps Mohawk Valley

The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team earned two much-needed Region 3 road wins as they defeated Mohawk Valley and improved to 20-6 on the season, marking the second straight season the baseball program surpassed 20-wins in a season.

GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 12, Mohawk Valley 1 (Final – 6 Innings)

As a team, the Vikings combined for 15 hits and were led by Matthew Carrera, who finished the day 3-of-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBIs. Tyree Jackson, Connor Waiting and Ethan Pues all collected two hits in the first game and combined to score four runs with six RBIs.

Pues finished 2-of-3 at the plate with three RBIs, including a double and a three-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Vikings back on top 3-1. The Vikings continued to pour in the runs, including a six-run sixth inning on seven Hudson Valley hits, including five doubles.

The offensive output supporting Hudson Valley's starting pitcher, Andrew Wilson, who tossed five innings and gave up one run on four hits with eight strikeouts. Richie Tamsett entered the game in relief and closed out the final inning without giving up a hit.

GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 9, Mohawk Valley 7 (Final)

The second game proved to be a much closer contest from the opening game, but the Vikings prevailed late five runs in the final two innings with clutch pitching at the end to shutdown Mohawk Valley's late-game heroics.

Hudson Valley utilized four pitchers with Cole Flannery securing the win while pitching the final two innings of the game. Flannery allowed three runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts on the day. Jimmy Wilson earned the start, tossing the first two innings and allowed four runs on four hits. Kwintin Nurse and William Baumann held on to the middle innings, allowing zero hits with five strikeouts over 3.0 innings.

Offensively, Hudson Valley was led by Brendan Curry, who finished the game 3-of-4 at the plate with four RBIs on two doubles. Ethan Pues continued to swing a big bat as he connected for his second home run on the day, a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Vikings ahead 4-0.

ON DECK:

The baseball team has a few days to rest before they take on nationally-ranked Herkimer on Saturday and Sunday for a four-game series. This Saturday, senior day, the Vikings will host Herkimer at 12 p.m. at Joe Bruno Stadium on the campus of HVCC before the series turns to Herkimer on Sunday.
