The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (18-7) won their third straight game after sweeping Mohawk Valley on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Bruno Stadium. The Vikings baseball program have now won nine of their last 10 games.
Game One: Hudson Valley 10, Mohawk Valley 2
The Vikings took the first game of the doubleheader which was highlighted by a five-run third inning as the first six batters reached base. Anthony Raimo and Nick Hansen each collected a 2-RBI single in the third, which put the Vikings ahead 7-1 over Mohawk Valley.
Starting pitcher Kyle Lambert started slow, giving up one run in the first inning, but rebounded nicely as he pitched five complete innings and gave up only two runs on six hits and added four strikeouts for his third victory of the season.
Hansen led the charge with three hits and four RBI, including a double in the second inning. Derrick Miller, Jackson Wenstrom, Nick Thomas, and Vicente Mendoza, who make up the top half of the Vikings lineup, each recorded multiple hits against Mohawk Valley's pitchers. Miller connected for a solo home run in the fifth inning, his third home run of the season.
Game Two: Hudson Valley 10, Mohawk Valley 9
In the second game, the Vikings needed to score five runs in the sixth inning to erase a four-run deficit to complete the series sweep. The Vikings earned six walks in the sixth inning to put pressure on the Hawks pitching staff as they battled through the lineup to take a 10-9 lead.
Hudson Valley's top of the lineup (Miller, Riley Nagle, Wenstrom) combined to hit 6-for-11 with six runs scored. While the middle of the lineup, which consisted of Mendoza, Raimo and Matt Dagostino, did their job and drove in six runs for the Vikings.
Dylan Sheely earned the win in relief as he closed out the final two innings and shutdown the Hawks lineup. Sheely faced six batters and did not give up a hit while striking out four.
Hudson Valley will travel to play Mohawk Valley again this Thursday in Utica, NY for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
