The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (13-9) defeated Columbia-Greene Community College (9-17) 9-3 and 10-8 on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings struck early in game one, scoring three runs in the first two innings. They would tack on three more in both the sixth and seventh inning en route to a six-run victory. Jarrod Ford (Hoosic Valley/Schaghticoke) picked up the win on the mound going six strong innings, allowing one earned run on six hits and four strikeouts. Mike Sunkes (Catholic Central/Waterford) led the Vikings offensively with three RBIs and a homerun. Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs), Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) and Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) all recorded two hits, combining for three RBIs and four runs scored in the win.
Trailing 7-3 in the sixth inning of game two, the Vikings went on a rally to score three runs. Lushkevich had a two-out double, cutting the lead to one. The Twins added another run in the bottom half of the inning, and Hudson Valley trailed by two heading into their final at-bat. In the top of the seventh, Kozak led off with a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Bradley Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) drove in Kozak with a double down the left field line, making the score 8-7. Scaccia came up with an RBI single up the middle that plated Adams, knotting the score at eight. Sunkes had yet another big hit on the day when he singled in Scaccia to give the Vikings the lead. Hudson Valley scored again on a Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy) two-out hit that drove in Sunkes. Andrew Kramer (Shenedehowa/Clifton Park) came in to slam the door and earn the save, retiring the side in order to end the game. Sunkes and Scaccia each recorded three hits, and Adams and Lushkevich chipped in two RBI's apiece in the comeback win.
The Vikings host Columbia-Greene tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
