The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (2-4) split with Herkimer County Community College (4-9), losing game one 4-1 and winning game two 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
The Generals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and the Vikings could never recover. John Craig (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) scored the team's first and only run in the fifth when he was hit by a pitch to walk in the run. The Vikings threatened the next at bat when Brad Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) flied out, taking a ball deep to the left-center warning track. Herkimer tacked on one more run in the sixth for the 4-1 victory.
The Vikings got off to a better start in game two when Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) led off the game with a single, and Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) drove him in with a double. Lushkevich led off the third with another single, and this time Craig ripped a double to bring him in, making it 2-0. Herkimer struck back in the fourth with two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2. Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) came up with a big two-out, two RBI single in the sixth, giving the Vikings a two-run lead heading into the final inning. Once again, Herkimer answered back with a clutch two-out hit scoring two runs to tie the game at 4-4. It wasn't until the Vikings loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh when the Generals threw a wild pitch that scored the winning run with two outs.
The Vikings host Fulton-Montgomery for a pair of game on Tuesday starting at 2 p.m.
