TYLER, TX - Hudson Valley Community College's run in the 2008 JUCO World Series came to an end today as Gloucester County College eliminated the Vikings with an 11-3 win at Mike Carter Field.
Hudson Valley finishes its season at 32-10.
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead on Mike Guillod's home run in the top of the first inning, but the Roadrunners' answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
Hudson Valley starter Ryan Washburn couldn't get out of the second inning as Gloucester scored three runs on four hits to take a 5-1 lead. Horace Lingham singled in a run and Joe Perez followed with 2-run RBI double, ending Washburn's day. In 1 1/3 innings, he allowed five runs on five hits.
The Roadrunners gave starter Ryan Lally more than enough run support as he held the Vikings scoreless in the second and third innings. After getting Jeremy Villano to hit into a double play, Lally struck out Mike McCrone to end the second inning and got out of a jam in the third. Hudson Valley had runners on second and third, but he struck out Scott Robinson to end the inning.
In the fourth inning, the Vikings scored an unearned run to cut the lead to 5-2 and had a chance to get back into the game. But like in the first two games, Hudson Valley could not come up with the big hit with runners on base. With the bases loaded and the go-ahead run at the plate, Mike Guillod ended the threat by grounding out to short, ending the inning. In the game, the Vikings left 11 runners on base and a total of 29 in the three games.
Gloucester put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth with five runs on three hits. Perez hit an RBI single to left off of reliever Chris Chisena and Castro followed with a run-scoring double. Adam Soley gave the Roadrunners' a commanding 10-2 lead with a two-run RBI triple to right field.
Hudson Valley added a run in the top of the seventh, but the game ended in the bottom of the seventh when the mercy rule took effect as Lingham's run scoring single put the Roadrunners' ahead by eight runs.
Lally allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out six to improve his record to 6-0, while Washburn fell to 4-2 on the season.
