TYLER, TX - John Barna and Marc Peluso each drove in three runs as the Hudson Valley Community College baseball team staved off elimination with a 13-4 win over Manchester Community College today at the 2008 JUCO World Series in Tyler, Texas.
With the win, the Vikings (32-9) will play the winner of tonight's Gloucester County College (NJ)-Joliet Junior College (IL) game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
After being held to a season-low three hits in Saturday's 10-5 loss to Ridgewater College, Hudson Valley bounced back with 13 runs on 13 hits. Max Keado and Rich Guillod each had three hits, while Peluso added two hits in the win.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning and had a chance to add to their lead as they had the bases loaded in each of the first three innings, but Hudson Valley pitcher James Joy was able to escape without any further damage and held the Manchester bats in check until the Vikings' offense came alive.
After scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings, the Vikings broke open a close game with four runs in the fifth inning. Marc Peluso had a 2-run single and Barna added a sac fly to give Hudson Valley a 6-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Hudson Valley added three more runs, including two on John Barna's opposite field home run. The game ended in the seventh inning (mercy rule) after Rich Guillod's two-run homer gave the Vikings' a 13-4 lead.
Joy allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out three in five and a third innings to pick up the win. Robert Piser came in with one out in the fifth and faced six batters, allowing no hits and striking out two.
