BATAVIA, NY - Rich Guillod (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley) hit a 3-run home run and Justin Shannon (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) pitched seven strong innings to lead the Hudson Valley Community College baseball team to a 9-4 win over Genesee Community College on Saturday in the semifinals of the Region III Baseball Tournament. With the win, the Vikings will play Niagara Community College in tomorrow's championship game at 12 noon at Dwyer Stadium.
Hudson Valley jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on Guillod's eighth home run of the season. Max Keado (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) led off the game by reaching on a throwing error and Mike Guillod (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley) singled to center to put runners on first and third. Rich Guillod came up and hit Andre Kinder's first pitch deep over the left field fence for the home run.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Chris Page and Dave Gardiner, but the Vikings answered back with a run in the fourth inning on Mike McCrone's (Binghamton, NY/Whitney Point) RBI double to left field.
Hudson Valley added two more runs in the sixth inning to increase its lead to 6-1, but Genesee rallied with three runs in the eighth inning. The Cougars took advantage of three Rich Guillod errors to cut the lead to 6-4. But that would be as close as Genesee would get as pitcher Chris Chisena came in relief of Shannon with no outs in the eighth inning and retired the six batters he faced to record his first save of the season.
The Vikings put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a commanding 9-4 lead.
Justin Shannon allowed four runs on 10 hits and struck out four to improve his record to 6-1.
Because Hudson Valley has not lost in the tournament yet, the Vikings have two chances to win the event and advance to the NJCAA Division III World Series (May 17 in Tyler, Texas).
