The Hudson Valley Community College (26-18/15-6 Region III) split a doubleheader with Jefferson Community College (20-19/14-12 Region III) earlier today at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Hudson Valley won the opener, 11-1, and dropped a 7-5 eight-inning decision in the second game.
Sophomore Tom Zink (Guilderland/Guilderland High School) had four hits in the doubleheader to become Hudson Valley's all-time hit leader with 121 hits. He surpassed Ryan Gijon-Owen, who had 120 hits from 2003 to 2004.
Hudson Valley exploded for eight runs in the second inning of the opener. Freshman Matt LaValley (Schenectady/Guilderland High School) had the big hit in the inning with a three-run double. Sophomore Ben Bushey (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls High School) finished the game three-for-four with four RBI and Zink was two-for-four with two RBI.
Freshman pitcher Casey Avery (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa High School) allowed just one run on two hits to pick up the win on the mound. He struck out one and walked three.
Derek Murray was three-for-four with three doubles and an RBI to lead Jefferson in the second game.
Freshman Mike Hart (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) drove in two runs for the Vikings.
