The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team, which is ranked No. 13 in the preseason NJCAA Division III Poll, opened its season with a doubleheader sweep (19-1, 6-1) of Atlantic Cape Community College on Saturday. The Vikings then dropped a 6-1 and 13-8 decision at Cecil Community College on Sunday. Cecil entered the doubleheader ranked ninth in the NJCAA Division II poll.
Sophomore Tom Zink (Guilderland/Guilderland High School) had four hits, including two home runs to lead Hudson Valley in the opening game win over Atlantic Cape. Freshman Chris Guido (Ft. Pierce, FL/Westwood High School) finished with three hits and freshmen Nate Novak (Hudson/Hudson High School) and Nicholas Barbera (Niskayuna/Niskayuna High School) had two hits apiece.
Sophomore Phil Carr (Shandaken/Onteora High School) allowed one run on three hits to pick up the win on the mound for the Vikings.
Novak struck out 13 batters in five innings to pick up the win over Atlantic cape in the second game. Freshmen Don Reilly (Troy/Troy High School) and Mike Hart (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) had two hits apiece for the Vikings.
Freshman Dustin Teta (Schenectady/Colonie High School) and Matt Lavalley (Schenectady/Guilderland High School) each had a pair of hits for the Vikings in the 13-8 loss to Cecil.
