Sophomore pitcher K.K. Pierce (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) tossed a five-hit shutout to lead Hudson Valley Community College to a 7-0 win over Clinton Community College (0-4) in the opening game of a doubleheader earlier today at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy. Hudson Valley also won the nightcap, 5-2.
Hudson Valley (11-6) scored six runs in the fourth inning of the opener. Sophomore second baseman Joel Molina (Middletown/Middletown High School) had a two-run single in the inning and finished the game with two hits and two RBI. Freshman shortstop Nick Testo (Wynantskill/Troy High School) and sophomore catcher Craig Mastroianni (Colonie/Colonie High School) also had two hits for the Vikings.
Pierce struck out six batters and walked two to record his first shutout of the season and the third of his career.
Freshman Tom Zink (Rotterdam/Guilderland High School) had two hits and an RBI to pace the Vikings in the nightcap. Testo also drove in two runs.
Freshman Josh Frank (Glenmont/Bethlehem High School) allowed one hit and two unearned runs to pick up the win on the mound for Hudson Valley. He struck out five and walked four. Sophomore Vince Laviano (Troy/Troy High School) pitched the final two innings to pick up the save.
Hudson Valley, ranked sixth in the latest NJCAA Division III poll, will visit Mohawk Valley Community College for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9, and then will return home on Sunday, April 10 to meet Corning Community College in a doubleheader that begins at noon.
