Steve Sayre (East Greenbush/Columbia High School), who recently completed his sophomore season with the Hudson Valley Community College baseball team, has been named the Region III Division III Player of the Year and the Most Valuable Player of Mountain Valley Conference.
Sayre, who split time at third base and first base for the Vikings this season, led the region with a .450 (72-for-160) batting average. He also had 23 doubles, four home runs and 57 RBI.
Also earning All-Region honors for Hudson Valley were sophomore outfielder Rashad Barksdale (Hudson/Hudson High School), freshman second baseman Joel Molina (Middletown/Middletown High School) and sophomore pitcher Jesse Hendriksen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury High School).
Barksdale hit .366 (41-for-112) with four home runs, 24 RBI and 19 stolen bases. Molina batted .393 (57-for-145) with 20 doubles and 34 RBI. Hendriksen was 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA.
Joining Sayre on the All-Conference Team were Barksdale, Hendriksen and sophomore shortstop Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie, TX High School), who hit .382 (60-for-157) with 17 doubles, five home runs and 59 RBI.
Hudson Valley set a school and Region III record with 42 wins. The Vikings finished the year with a 42-10 record, won the Mountain Valley Conference and finished third at the Region III Division III Tournament.
