Sophomore pitcher K.K. Pierce (Honolulu, HI/Saratoga Springs High School) tossed a complete-game five-hit shutout to lead the Hudson Valley Community College baseball team to a 9-0 win over Genesee Community College (4-17) in the second game of a doubleheader played today in Troy. Hudson Valley won the opening game 9-6.
Hudson Valley, which has won 25 of its last 26 games, finished the regular season with a 40-8 record and will open Region III tournament play on Tuesday against an opponent to be announced later this evening.
Pierce struck out nine and walked none in seven innings of work to improve his record to 6-1 on the year.
Sophomore Rashad Barksdale (Hudson/Hudson High School) was three-for-four with a home run and two stolen bases to lead the Vikings' offensive attack in the nightcap. Sophomore Jonathan Callahan (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) had three hits and two RBI, and sophomore Kyle Sharp (Latham/Shaker High School) hit a solo home run.
Trailing 3-0 in the opener, the Vikings scored six runs in the fifth inning with the help of a two-run double by sophomore Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie, TX High School) and a two-run home run by sophomore Steve Sayre (East Greenbush/Columbia High School). Sayre finished the game with three hits and two RBI and Gijon-Owen had two hits and three RBI.
Sophomore Carmine Berghela (Albany/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School) added two hits, including a home run, and sophomore Kody Caulfield (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) was two-for-four with an RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Jesse Hendriksen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury High School) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief to improve his record to 6-0 on the season. He struck out three and walked one.
