Cooperstown, N.Y., April 21 - Playing at Cooperstown's historic Doubleday Field, Hudson Valley Community College's baseball team captured both ends of a doubleheader against SUNY Cobleskill, 3-2 and 13-3.
The first game was a classic.
Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning - Bobby Krogh (Troy H.S.) tossed the first six innings for the Vikings, scattering three hits and striking out 10 batters - Hudson Valley's Jeremy Gatto (Columbia H.S.) drew a leadoff walk. Gatto moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jay Lansing (Trumansburg H.S.), which Josh Goodbred (Lansingburgh H.S.) following by earning a free pass to first. Justin Meagher (Colonie H.S.) plated Gatto when he reached on an error and, with two outs, Silvestre Castro (Norman Thomas H.S.) blasted a single to the wall in right-centerfield, pushing Goodbred home with the game-winning run.
Game two was tight until the sixth inning.
With Hudson Valley holding a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth, Cobleskill had a runner on third. Meagher squelched the Cobleskill threat by snaring a line drive and gunning down a runner from right field, though. Catcher Gennys Medina (Norman Thomas H.S.) made a fine defensive effort on the play, blocking the plate and hanging onto the ball during a collision.
Hudson Valley then exploded offensively in the bottom of the sixth, pounding out five hits and nine runs. Jason Martin (Pine Bush H.S.) had three hits, including a home run that cleared the stands in deep right field at Doubleday, and four runs batted in. Castro had three hits and he scored three runs. Castro finished the day with six hits. Aaron Marchese (Dennis-Yarmouth H.S., MA) threw a complete-game five-hitter for the Vikings, striking out eight batters.
Hudson Valley, ranked No. 1 among NJCAA Division III Region III teams, is now 22-10-1 overall. Cobleskill is 1-14.
