Troy, N.Y., April 14 - Clinton Community College did not score a run until the fifth inning of the second game as Hudson Valley Community College's baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader this afternoon at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium by scores of 6-0 and 5-1.
In the first game, Jeremy Gatto (Columbia H.S.) led off the second inning with a double to right-center. He then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored the first run of the game on a single by Shawn Miller (Troy H.S.). In the third, Bob Krogh (Troy H.S.) singled, stole second, moved to third on a Jason Martin (Pine Bush H.S.) single, and stole home when Chris Cooper (Shenendehowa H.S.), running for Martin, stole second and drew the catcher's throw across the diamond.
The bulk of the Viking's runs came in the fourth inning. Gennys Medina (Norman Thomas H.S.) and Miller started the inning with walks, and Josh Goodbred (Lansingburgh H.S.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Justin Meagher (Colonie HS) knocked in Medina with a sacrifice fly. An error by the shortstop on a Jason Lansing (Trumansburg H.S.) ground ball allowed Miller to score, and Krogh sent a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Goodbred.
Matt Nobles (Bishop Maginn) led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to left-center field to cap the Viking's scoring.
Alex Tate (George Washington H.S.) pitched six innings of shutout baseball, striking out seven and scattering six hits. Miller closed out the game by striking out two batters and forcing a pop-up in the seventh.
In the first inning of game two, after Austin Walker (Stillwater H.S.) singled, Krogh moved him to third with a single, and Martin scored him with a sacrifice fly. Then, in the second, Silvestre Castro (Norman Thomas H.S.) led off with a single to right, stole second, and scored on a double by Greg Henry (Troy H.S.).
Martin pitched five innings, striking out five, and allowing only three hits and one earned run. He helped his cause at the plate by adding a solo home run to right-center in the third inning and another RBI in the fifth.
Meagher shut down Clinton Community College by pitching a solid sixth inning, and Goodbred pitched a perfect seventh to close it out.
Hudson Valley, ranked first among Region III teams, is now 17-9-1 overall and 10-0 in Region III play. Clinton Community College is 0-8 overall.
