Troy, N.Y., April 10 - A four-run fourth inning gave Hudson Valley Community College's baseball team its first lead of the game, and Hudson Valley's defense held strong the rest of the way as the Vikings posted a 5-4 win in this evening's contest with NJCAA Division III Region III rival Columbia Greene Community College at the Joseph L Bruno Stadium.
Hudson Valley's Justin Meagher (Colonie H.S.) led off the fourth inning with a triple to left-center field. He scored on a single by Silvestre Castro (Norman Thomas H.S.), who then stole second base. Two batters later, Matt Nobles (Bishop Maginn H.S.) blasted a double to left field, scoring Castro and starting a two-out Hudson Valley rally. Jason Lansing (Trumansburg H.S.) singled in Nobles; Greg Henry (Troy H.S.) walked; and Jeremy Gatto (Columbia H.S.) knocked Lansing in with a bloop single.
Meagher then led off the fifth inning with a double, and Castro singled him in for the second inning in a row.
Shawn Miller (Troy H.S.) earned the win, scattering seven hits across six innings. Aaron Marchese (Dennis-Yarmouth H.S., MA) came out of the bullpen in the seventh and contributed two solid innings in relief, giving up only two hits. Josh Goodbred (Lansingburgh H.S.) earned the save by pitching a one-hit ninth. With a runner on first and one out, Goodbred also cleanly fielded a ground ball and began the game-ending double play.
Hudson Valley, ranked first among Region III teams, is now 12-9-1 overall and 6-0 in Region III play. Columbia Greene is 9-10 overall and 4-2 in Region III.
