Hudson Valley Community College's nationally ranked baseball team will christen the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium with a pair of games on Saturday, April 6. The Vikings, ranked No. 8 in the nation among NJCAA Division III teams, will host Holyoke Community College for a pair of games. The first pitch will be thrown at 1 p.m.
Hudson Valley's baseball team, which went to the NJCAA Division III World Series in 2001, is currently 8-7-1 overall and 3-0 in NJCAA Division III Region III competition.
The Bruno Stadium also will serve as home of the New York-Penn League's Tri-City ValleyCats, a Houston Astros-affiliated Class A baseball team that plays its first home game on June 21. Additionally, the stadium will offer new academic opportunities to Hudson Valley's students and will serve as a community resource.
In the 2000-01 academic year, Hudson Valley's athletic teams combined to win 72 percent of their contests. The ice hockey team won the NJCAA championship, the baseball team earned a berth in the NJCAA World Series and the football team won the Region III title. The women's basketball team earned a No. 1 national ranking and turned in a 24-3 record while the men's hoop squad competed in the Region III championship game. Additionally, two Vikings earned Region III Player-of-the-Year status, 20 were named All-Region III performers, and 10 were honored with All-American status.
