Hudson Valley Community College second baseman Silvestre Castro was recently selected as a Third Team All-American infielder. Castro, a freshman who stands just 5-foot-7 and weighs 145 pounds, also was chosen as a First Team All-Region III infielder. He came to Hudson Valley from Norman Thomas High School in New York City.
In Hudson Valley's 40 games prior to the NJCAA Division III World Series, which the Vikings are currently competing in, Castro scored a team-high 60 runs. He needs just one more run to break the NJCAA Division III Region III record for most runs in a season. The No. 2 hitter in Hudson Valley's lineup, he led the squad with a .409 batting average and a .496 on-base percentage. Despite his diminutive size, Castro whacked nine doubles, 10 triples and three home runs. He added 38 RBI and 14 stolen bases.
Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, Hudson Valley has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining.
