Hudson Valley Community College's baseball team (29-8) will compete in the NJCAA Division III Region III tournament this weekend, facing Columbia-Greene Community College (28-10) at 4 p.m. Friday. The winner of the three-day, double-elimination event - held at Murnane Field in Utica - advances to the national championship.
Hudson Valley, the No. 3 seed, played its way into the tourney by crushing Jamestown Community College, 16-4, in a sub-regional game on May 8. Bobby Krogh (Troy) got the win on the mound for the Vikings, his fifth of the season, and blasted a home run and triple in the first inning. He finished with five RBI.
The Vikings open up the tourney by playing No. 2 seed Columbia-Greene. The two teams have played twice this season, with Columbia-Greene capturing both games. Offensively and defensively, however, Hudson Valley ranks ahead of Columbia-Greene. The Vikings are first in Region III in team ERA (3.14) and fifth in team batting average (.305). Columbia-Greene is not ranked among the top five in either statistic.
Krogh, Nick Esopi (Stillwater), Nick Borgia (Scotia) and Silvestre Castro (Norman Thomas) lead Hudson Valley. Krogh is batting .389 with eight triples, four home runs and 45 RBI. He also is 5-1 on the mound with three saves, 51 strikeouts and a 2.06 ERA. Esopi is 5-1 with one save, 51 strikeouts and a 3.55 ERA. He is batting .307 with four home runs. Borgia is 4-1 with a save, 43 strikeouts and a 2.28 ERA. Castro, a second baseman, is batting .404 with nine doubles, nine triples and three home runs. He has scored 53 runs, knocked in 35 runs and has stolen 12 bases.
