Coach Devon Tomson enters his fifth season as head coach of the men's soccer program. Tomson comes to HVCC with extensive experience in collegiate soccer, as well as a diverse background with several top level youth academies across the country.

In 2022-23, Coach Tomson guided the Vikings to a 9-6-3 record and earned a Region 3 playoff berth as a top-8 seed and advanced to the quarterfinal round against nationally-ranked Genesee. In the 18 games played, the Vikings scored 39 goals and averaged 2.17 goals per game, which included a five game win streak with road wins over Erie and Niagara.

In 2021-22, the first season back on the pitch since the Covid-19 pandemic, the Vikings posted a 4-9 record and earned a postseason berth, a matchup at Fulton-Montgomery in the Region 3 First Round. In the 13 games, the Vikings scored 20 goals and averaged 9.5 shots per game.

The 2020-21 season was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The program was able to utlize social distancing techniques to have a fall and spring practice season, but no games were held during this academic year.

In Coach Tomson’s first season at the helm, the men’s soccer program finished with a 5-9-2 season and qualified for the NJCAA Region 3 postseason, where they were defeated 2-1 by SUNY Broome in double overtime. In the 16 games played, the program scored 23 goals on 8.1 shots per game.

Coach Tomson has spent time on both the East and West Coasts in his career. Beginning his career in his hometown of Red Hook NY where he helped both the Men’s and Women’s teams of Bard College, and coached as a Director for Middlepath FC in LaGrange, NY. He attained his Master’s Degree in Physical Education and Coaching from Springfield and Canisius Colleges, as well as a USSF C license and United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Diploma.

While on the west coast Coach Tomson served two full seasons with the famed Banana Slugs at UC Santa Cruz. While at UC Santa Cruz he helped coach the men to two NCAA National Tournament births, as well as helped graduate three players into the professional ranks. While in California Tomson also spent time with such clubs as Red Star Soccer Club, partner of the European giants AFC Ajax. Where he won a California State Cup Championship. He was also assistant to the Pacific Soccer Academy Men’s NPSL team that served as the partner to MLS club the San Jose Earthquakes. Coach Tomson also spent one year with US Developmental Academy De Anza Force before returning to NY in 2013 when he was offered to return to his hometown as the Head Men’s Coach at Division III, Bard College.

After taking the Head Men’s Coaching position at Bard College Tomson spent one season with a Division-1 program, Marist College as the Assistant Men’s Coach. Since moving to the Capital District in 2014, Tomson has been devoting his time to coaching for top level youth academies around the Albany area while being a full-time father of two young children. In 2014 he was the Academy Director with the Albany Alleycats. And the four years he was Director of Grass Roots & College Prep with Global Premier Soccer Albany.

Coach Tomson has spent time at many levels of the game in many diverse backgrounds.
